Foreboding
This early, there are
signs which raise doubts as to whether the coming elections are going to
be clean and honest, as promised by the Commission on Elections (Comelec)
and the Arroyo administration. We have no less than Comelec chairman
Benjamin Abalos announcing that the poll body is considering naming Kampi
– which is Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s party – as “the dominant minority
party,” thereby depriving the Genuine Opposition of a copy of election
returns. There was the filing of candidacy for the Senate by a certain
Jose Peter Cayetano, whose name sounds strikingly similar to that of
senatorial candidate Alan Peter Cayetano – a similarity that could cause
confusion and manipulation at the polls. There are the baseless
disqualification bids against the progressive party-list groups Bayan Muna
(People First), Anakpawis (Toiling Masses), and the Gabriela Women’s Party
(GWP) by two women claiming to be members of rival party-list group
Akbayan. All these plots forebode foul play in this year’s senatorial and
local elections and could aggravate the legitimacy crisis that has hounded
the Arroyo administration since the May 2004 polls.
