PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Peeling a Pailful for a Pittance

Mang Cesar, 42, a resident of the Parola Compound in Tondo, Manila makes a living by peeling garlic. It is not only the smallness of the garlic pieces that makes the work difficult, as your fingers would also feel a burning sensation after handling too many of these for too long. Not only that: one would surely experience a stiffening of the back and joints from doing that all day. For every kilogram of garlic peeled, Mang Cesar gets P5. With him being able to peel 15 kilograms of garlic a day, he gets P75 daily for all that work. The Chinese businessman he sells the garlic to then sells it again at P40 for every kilogram. Small wonder then that he looks as though asking himself why some have all the luck.
