Whip Marks

A cultural activist from Manila, portraying the tortured Jesus Christ in a March 16 rally against the proposed value-added tax (VAT) to dramatize the suffering Filipino masses, has the acronym painted on his back in red as to look like whip marks. Indeed, imposing the VAT is like whipping the people, who are already weighed down by low wages and high prices of goods and services. The protester aims to tell us that increased VAT rates will result in deeper wounds for the people.
