SALUNGGUHIT

Crucifying the People

By Jasper Almirante/ Bulatlat

The Philippines ushers in the Christian calendar’s Holy Week this year with 13 activist leaders killed in Central Luzon alone since January. These killings, in which state forces are invariably pointed to as the perpetrators, have taken place at a time when the people are in the direst of straits. The killings of prominent personalities who have taken the cudgels for their legitimate demands for justice and good governance are an added burden as they are intended to terrorize the people into accepting things as they are. The people are made to put up with these acts of terror like a man headed for Golgotha to be crucified. Benefiting from the protection of the status quo against any form of legitimate dissent are the ruling elite and their imperialist masters.

Salungguhit literally means to underline; figuratively, to underscore or highlight.
