PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Sagada Horizon

There are few places in the Philippines, even in its countryside, which remain as idyllic and serene as Sagada, Mt. Province, a popular tourist and backpackers’ haven 275 kms. north of Manila. Sagada used to be a quiet, rustic town, with its households using only lamps for lighting. The town retains much of its ambiance, as captured by this photo of its horizon. The idyllic serenity of Sagada, where there seems to be as many pine trees as there are houses, is what mainly draws tourists, as well as artists, to it. For a time Sagada was home to artists and independent filmmakers; it is where American historian William Henry Scott is also buried. But the inflow of tourists is starting to pave the way for urbanization of this town.
