FLOWERS OVER FOOD

Schoolgirls dance their way down Baguio City’s (246 kms north of Manila) Session Road as part of the city’s yearly observance of the Panagbenga (Flower Harvest) Festival. The flower festival is promoted by the government as a major tourist attraction, amid the country’s increasingly alarming hunger statistics. Aside from commercializing culture, the government’s aggressive promotion of the festival is also essentially a promotion of the planting of flowers instead of food crops.
