The Oil Deregulation
Law, which government claimed would benefit the people by promoting
competition in the oil industry, has favored only the big oil companies
which have not been prevented from acting like a cartel. Government claims
to be powerless in dealing with relentless oil price hikes numbering more
than 60 since the passage of the Oil Deregulation Law in 1996. In such a
situation, the transport sector – heavily affected by oil price hikes –
has no recourse except to go on strike.
Salungguhit literally means to
underline; figuratively, to
underscore or highlight.
