PHOTO OF THE WEEK

WAITING FOR DUSK

As dusk begins to kiss the horizon, a group of children perch on a fishing boat in one of the shores of Negros Island, central Philippines. Negros, which used to be a major sugarcane producer, exports many of its young men and women for contractual work abroad as abject poverty stalks the island. In the midst of scarcity, which continues to fuel social unrest and drives many Negrenses to embrace the armed struggle, Negros’ fishing grounds remain a reliable source of livelihood to many. But the catch is getting meager as a result of pollution and restrictions – but then that’s another story.
