A BREAK BY THE PARK 

The boy wearing a cap gives a different meaning to the word “weekend,” for out of necessity he has to spend his break from school eking out a living by shining shoes, as he does in this photo taken at Burnham Park, Baguio City, a mountain resort in northern Philippines. With nothing more than a small rag, two small cans of shoeshine wax, and a brush, he does his thing and in a few minutes gets some money which will most likely help get him a meal the next school day. Shoeshine boys like him are seen all over Baguio, usually plying their trade for weary vacationers’ feet. Most of them look forward to the hour when it is their own shoes somebody else will be shining.
