PHOTO OF THE WEEK:

TOBACCO DANCE –WITHOUT THE SMOKE

Young dancers clad in skirts made of dried tobacco leaves entertain tourists and residents in a street dance parade last March 29 in Candon City, Ilocos Sur in northern Philippines some 10 hrs ride from Manila. A tobacco-producing city, Candon chose to celebrate its third year of cityhood and 106th founding anniversary that day with a tobacco parade. Tobacco farming is a major source of livelihood for Ilocanos and has often figured prominently in Ilocos history. Somehow, the colorful parade is a way of keeping tobacco farming – which has been in trouble for years – alive.
