Despite the claimed growth in the country’s economy, an increasing number of people are getting disappointed with their economic condition, according to the yearend 2003 IBON nationwide survey.

Of the survey’s total respondents, 50.08 percent said that the economy worsened compared with last year, while only 5.68 percent said it improved. The results do not differ significantly with the results of the 2003 third quarter survey that showed 50.84 percent saying the economy worsened and 5.76 percent saying it improved.

But the latest survey also showed that 50.26 percent of the respondents felt that their livelihood worsened compared with last year, up from 42.55 percent in third quarter 2003.

Meanwhile, 68.07 percent reported that their family income is not enough to meet their basic needs, higher than the 61.14 percent recorded in the previous quarter.

Most of the respondents also said that there are no or very limited economic opportunities in their area. While in the third quarter 2003, 32.03 percent said there are no jobs/livelihood opportunities in their area, 37.09 percent said so in the fourth quarter. On the other hand, those who said there are jobs/livelihood opportunities fell from 16.90 percent to 9.12 percent.

IBON conducted the nationwide survey on Dec. 1-14, 2003 involving 1,162 respondents and with a margin of error of plus or minus three percent.
