Nanay Mameng: Militant, True Leader of the Masses

With the huge photo of Mrs. Macapagal-Arroyo as backdrop, Carmen “Nanay Mameng” blurts out the harshest words on the president during the May Day rally in Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila. She called the president Gloria “Makapal-ang-mukha” Arroyo and likened her promises for the poor to “balloons that readily explode” and “paper boats that sink.” Nanay (mother) Mameng, vice-chair of Anakpawis, was an Edsa Dos figure and much-sought-after rally speaker for her simple eloquence and militancy that evoke images her mass audiences easily grasp.
