Soldiers trespass farm of Burgos family

MANILA – About 15 soldiers in full battle gear entered the farm of the Burgos family in barangay Tartaro, San Miguel, Bulacan at around 7:30 p.m, Nov. 25.

In a statement released to the media, Edita Burgos, mother of missing activist Jonas Burgos, demands an explanation from the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Sonny, the eldest son of Mrs. Burgos and the late press freedom icon Jose Burgos Jr., noticed some of the soldiers lurking outside his house this early evening. When he asked for an explanation, one of the soldiers said they were “just securing the area.”

Sonny repeatedly told the soldiers to get out of the private property. The soldiers eventually left the farm, but continued to stay at the perimeter of the area.

Mrs. Burgos, who has held the AFP accountable for the April 2007 abduction of her son Jonas, said the failure of the troops to explain their presence cannot but create suspicion and alarm, especially given her family’s strained relationship with the military.

A Quezon City court is hearing the case of abduction and illegal detention against a former Army major tagged as “accountable” for the disappearance of Jonas.

Still pending in the Supreme Court is a motion filed by the Burgoses, asking it to cite in contempt several ranking civilian and military officers earlier commanded by the high court to surface the missing activist-farmer. (https://www.bulatlat.com)
