MANILA – The execution of Mary Jane Veloso will push through, anytime tonight.

“No more concrete and realistic expectation that the decision would change. Let’s brace for it. Preparations here shifting to implementation of sentence anytime, most probably midnight. Hope we are darn wrong,” said Edre Olalia, secretary general of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, said.

Garry Martinez, chairperson of Migrante International, announced at the vigil at around 7:30 p.m. that Indonesian president Joko Widodo called for an emergency meeting with the migrant rights group to discuss Mary Jane’s case.

A few minutes later, however, he tearfully announced that the execution would push through.

“Profoundest apologies for failing Mary Jane, her family and all migrant workers, I could not bring Darren’s mom home alive,” Olalia said.

Earlier today, Attorney General M. Prasetyo said, “All countries whose citizens will be executed will certainly approach the government, but they cannot influence our sovereignty.”

Martinez said the both President Aquino and Widodo are murderers.

Mary Jane received the 72-hour mandatory notice on April 25, a day after the petition for a second judicial review was filed.

Mary Jane, her family and her supporters have long maintained that she is a victim of both drug and human trafficking. These served as grounds for her petition for a second judicial review, which was denied by the Supreme Court.

Mary Jane was arrested five years ago for allegedly carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin, stitched to the linings of a luggage lent to her by her recruiter. (https://www.bulatlat.com)
