MANILA – Mary Jane Veloso is in disbelief how her godsister has the guts to make up stories on how she ended up on death row, her lawyer said in a text message.

Edre Olalia, secretary general of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, said Mary Jane urged them to pursue a case against her recruiter, Ma. Kristina Sergio, “not only to give her justice but to save other future victims.”

In a television interview, Sergio said she is innocent of the accusations being hurled against her. Mary Jane, she claimed, sometimes left their room to meet strangers in the hotel lobby.

Mary Jane said her godsister offered her a good-paying job in Malaysia. Upon arriving there, however, she was informed that her employer had already hired someone else but a job is waiting for her in Indonesia. Mary Jane was then lent a bag, where the 2.6 kilograms of heroin was stitched in.

The Veloso family’s visit to Mary Jane began from 10:30 to 4:30 p.m. They are set to pay her a visit again tomorrow.

Olalia said everybody was “either sitting, squatting or lying down on a synthetic grass carpet laid down by prison officials for the visit, a picturesque image of a simple family having a simple life, spending a simple Sunday lazy afternoon.”

“After mass, there was a lot of banter, bonding, joking and just small talk. They all ate together a simple yet spicy meal using their hands,” he added, “It looked and felt surreal.”

Mary Jane also requested to speak with her two sisters – one in Bahrain and the other, Darling, 32, who was left here in Manila.

“I told our sister (Maritess Veloso-Laurente) that I also want to speak with Mary Jane. But she told me there is no signal (in the prison island),” she told Bulatlat.com.

Asked why she did not join the rest of their family, she said she explained to Mary Jane that, “I have to stay so that the issue will not die down. I told her that I will wait for her here.” (https://www.bulatlat.com)
