MANILA — Beauty queens including the outspoken former Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Maria Isabel Lopez are set to Sign Up Vs Pork! on Monday, Aug 25. From 6am to 1pm on that date, in Luneta or Rizal Park, various anti-pork organizations and individuals seeking to put an end to one of the biggest sources of funds for patronage politics and political dynasty will gather to jumpstart the movement “Sign Up Against All Pork!
By afternoon, anti-pork groups led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan will march to Mendiola (Chino Roces Bridge) to bring the call against pork near Malacañang.
The Peoples Initiative Against Pork (PIAP) is urging the public to bring pens with them and sign “The Act Abolishing Pork Barrel.” The proposed law to be enacted via people’s initiative seeks to abolish the presidential and congressional pork barrel, mandates line item budgeting, prohibits and criminalizes allocation and use of lump sum discretionary funds, penalizes violators with six years and one day to ten years imprisonment and disqualification from holding public office.
