Artist Mideo Cruz wants to provoke critical thought, gets death threats instead

In the meantime, on one free-standing wall hangs a life-size crucifix festooned with scapulars and rosaries, as well as a red phallus.
Cruz shrugs off the outrage over the phalluses.

“It’s symbolic for patriarchy, a symbol of power. There are those who worship power, who put their faith in men who wield power even if the power is used against women, or against the whole of society. The fight for sexual and gender equality continues, doesn’t it? But the balance continues to be tipped in favor of the phallus. Is this good or bad? You decide,” he said.

(For some, the phalluses could very well represent the leadership of the Catholic Church in the Philippines – a group of grown men deciding on how women in the country do not have the right to control their own reproduction process, much less their sexuality. Currently the Catholic Church is hard at work campaigning against proposals for a reproductive health law. It has also come to a head against calls of the Lesbian, Gay ,Bisexual and Transsexual or LGBT community to allow same-sex marriages in the country — writer)

The former student of the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) is not new to the art scene at all and is in fact well known not only in local art circles, but internationally as well, having opened exhibits in Switzerland, Italy and the United States. He was also recipient of the Ateneo Art Awards in 2007 and awarded the CCP 13 artists awards in 2003.

The man is widely travelled, and has taken time to read up on the cultural history of religious iconography and the origins of religious symbolism.

“Everything around us can be considered as symbols, some are actually only symbols more than anything else. How we understand these symbols, how we use them is what gives them power and meaning,” he said.

Among activist circles, in the meantime, Cruz is known as a performance artist acting out pieces dealing with political issues like the interference of the United States on global affairs; human rights; and militarization. He is also a founding member of the artist group Ugat-Lahi. Ugat-Lahi is credited for the effigies presented and then burned during rallies led by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN).

Far from accusations that Cruz is only trying to generate controversy to be noticed, Cruz sheepishly admits that “Poleteismo” is actually the product of house cleaning. Apparently, the man is a pack-rat and for the last two decades he has been collecting various scraps of paper and whatnot with the general intention of some day putting them to use.

“We were cleaning the house and we discovered all this,” he said, pointing to the walls with their thousands of colorful, conflicting images like those from a series of MTV videos from various genres looped together. He and partner, artist and singer Raquel de Loyala usually spend two to three days pasting and putting together the massive collage that has sent religious groups seething.
Close Your Eyes and Think

Cruz frequently tries to shy away from questions that seek his own opinion on his work, but when pressed, he answers even if reluctantly.

“This is how I see the Filipino way of life — colorful, varied, full of conflicting beliefs and values. Can’t you just see these same images pasted on the walls of houses in the urban poor communities? And Filipino society, its racked with economic and political turmoil, and then there’s religion which frequently involves itself in the entire conglomeration of issues and developments,” he said.
Sure enough, if one does as Cruz advises — close your eyes after seeing the images, breathe and think– the walls begin to speak about the Filipino condition.

There’s the carton poster on the alphabet with “A” standing for “Apple” when apples are not grown in the Philippines and “J” is for Jeep and not for “jeepney.”

There’s the calendar where former First Lady Imelda Marcos smiles beatifically at her beholder.

Then there are the liquor bottles that used to contain expensive alcohol that could very well symbolize the corruption of the country because of the profligacy of its so-called leaders in government.

“I don’t like telling people what I mean when I paint something or what I want to say when I include an image in an installation. I would much rather that people talk about the work and think about they’ve seen,” Cruz said.

If only people would first think instead of being judgmental. In defense of religion and religious beliefs, some quarters have already taken to maliciously attributing Cruz’ controversial work to a “twisted sexuality.”

Freedom of Expression

The artist community has thrown its support behind Cruz and the CPP, saying that ‘Poleteismo’ protected by the provision of freedom of expression of the 1987 Constitution.

The Artists and cultural workers from the Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP) in a statement said that they support the CCP, specially its Visual Arts unit headed by Karen Flores, and the organizers of KULO for upholding freedom of expression.

Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist for Literature and current Chairperson of CAP said that Article 3 section 4 of the country’s constitution states that “no law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances.”

“The bishops and the lay leaders who are pressuring the CCP to close the show are within their right to speak against KULO, and they are free to admonish the Catholic faithful regarding what they find objectionable in Mideo’s artwork. We believe, however, that this demand to suppress the show smacks of the religious fascism of the friars of Rizal’s time and certainly unacceptable in the 21st century,” he said.

Lumbera went on to say that CAP welcomes the CCP’s call for a dialogue on the exhibit, believing that criticism of artists’ work is part of the artistic process and contributes to the growth of the artist.

” We caution critics, however, not to resort to intimidation and defamation that threaten the artist’s freedom of expression,” said CAP Secretary-General Prof. Neil Doloricon of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts.

“We call on artists and cultural workers from the different fields of art and humanities to stand steadfast against the curtailment of the Constitutional guarantee of free artistic expression that founding CAP Chairperson Lino Brocka persuaded the Convention to insert in the 1987 Constitution. When he advocated support for works “that will hurt…that will not make you rest…For the times are really bad, and given times like this, it is a crime to rest.” (https://www.bulatlat.com)

  1. Being a critical is not always a part of thinking, that what makes human unique in any other creatures in the world. Presentation of Art and Exhibits should always be firm and CCP should always be a venue for plain, just balance presentation of all individual who wants to share their idea through different expression about what they want in their life.
The freedom of expression should be in reality expressing what you what and what you like . In this kind of world were we live we should always strugle to make this fre but again we want also to be prepared for the consequences.

  2. This was the first time I read this story where Mark Logan is involved and I must say, I just lost every ounce of respect I had for that guy.

  3. Two things.

    1. A real Artist will not use other artworks for his own creation, specially to create something that opposes their purpose and meaning.

    2. Those artist who creates those images are Catholics, believers. It’s a direct hit to the moral of being an artist and to those people who are Catholics. It’s such a shame that people nowadays tends to forget that one important word. Respect.

“Everyone is responsible for their actions, even those who claim freedom”

  4. “ART IS ART.”

  5. this is what he wants you to be on thinking…there’s no wrong on these art. Art is art. ” IF ART SHOULD BE A SAINT ONE,THEN MIGHT AS WELL US PEOPLE.”

  8. Great job here.  I really enjoyed what you had to say.  Keep going because you definitely bring a new voice to this subject.  Not many people would say what youve said and still make it interesting.  Well, at least Im interested.  Cant wait to see more of this from you.

  10. Some truly fantastic information, Glad I found this. “The true republic men, their rights and nothing more women, their rights and nothing less.” by Franklin P. Adams.

  12. his work is the representation of today’s generation, just like some politicians, we believed that they are god-fearing citezen, but they are not, all they want is to awaken our mind that they are religious enough. when it comes to the so-called image of our creator, He’s not an exact image of god, with a long hair on it, he said in the holy bible that he dont like a man with long hair…………… heheheheheh,,,,,,, but we are worshiping his image that he is long hair………….. I am a roman catholic but i am not affected to his art………….. in every art there is a meaning behind it…………………….

  13. in reality there’s no really absolute freedom. respect begets respect.the representation of such art work do not only point the catholic Christians but all the other christian denomination.we should be all sensitive to the other peoples feelings. though we have a freedom of expression we should not abuse it. as an artist mideo has the right to express his feelings through his art but he exaggerated and for me insulted the christian community.

    -Juan Dela Cruz.

  14. Stupid sheep. You’re so afraid to question your antiquated religions that you refuse to open your eyes.

  15. Michaes says

KAYA ANG IBANG KATOLIKO NA DI NAIINTINDIHAN ANG KANILANG RELIGION AY MADALING MAKUHA NG ADD,BORN AGAIN, QUIBULOY AT IBA PA SABAK NG SABAK. AT PARA DOON SA NAGSASABI NA WALANG NAKA KITA SA DYOS READ THIS. IN THE BEGINING THE WORD WAS GOD AND BECAME FLESH AND DWELL AMONG US. BAKIT KAYO GALIT SA KATOLIKO KUNG MARAMING IPINAPATAY ANG ROMAN CATHOLIC SABI NG ISANG BUGOK HISTORY WALA AKONG PAKIALAM DOON. KUNG SINO ANG MAYSALA SYA ANG MAGDURUSA PERO BILANG ISANG KATOLIKO RELIGION ANG IPINAG TATANGOL KO AT HINDI KUNG SINO ANG NAG PAPATAY KUNG KANINO. LAHAT NG MAKA SATANAS AY MADALING PANIWALAAN LALO NA NG MGA ADVOCATE OF SATAN.

  16. Art is subjective. Mideo Cruz’s work manifests this statement. I think the problem lies with what Mr. Cruz has said. He has given the public the right to judge his work. By doing this, he has passed onto us his own right to freedom of expression.

  17. You all are stupid. Let the catholic church and the media brainwash all of you until you’re all lifeless puppets who don’t have the free will to think.

You all praise statues that so call portray the image of God? You think God is in those statues and deities you praise?

Those who don’t think on what Mideo Cruz was trying to portray, I pity you all.

  19. Mideo Cruz’ work may be ART for some and BLASPHEMY for others. i have read various definitions of the word ART in your comments to justify Mr. Cruz’ work. Those who were offended have expressed their anger as well. I find Mr. Cruz’ exhibit quite disturbing but it has not shattered my faith. For us, catholics, let us not condemn MIDEO CRUZ. When his time comes, he will have to face GOD himself, and let GOD JUDGE him.

  20. · Edit

Sabi nila, freedom of expression in the form of art is absolute. It is a constitutional right of every Filipino.

  22. Art is subjective, but you should not look at it literally. Whether visually stunning or not, art symbolizes something and conveys message. That’s why we were encouraged to use our critical thoughts, so we can see beyond the images portrayed, not just seeing Christ with a cock. The old saying holds true, that you should not judge the book immediately without reading it first.

You can present the argument of RESPECT. Have you thought why the exhibit was held in CCP, and not in public galleries in the malls or parks? Because people don’t go to CCP just for strolling or “mag-pa-aircon”. CCP is the place where people go to experience the arts and culture. And remember, some arts and cultures are shocking. If you do not understand the arts, or easily gets offended, don’t go to CCP. The artist respected your rights not to show in public but in CCP, now be respectful enough not to look or show the images to others, as many are dimwitted and don’t grasp the message immediately.

I think the brouhaha started when a self-important lunatic reporter, who thinks he’s one of the intelligent life-forms by watching Indie films in CCP (remember, Indie movies are becoming the hip today) happened to see the exhibit and sensationalized the whole thing. Now, tell me who stepped on the “respect” first?

PS. I hold firm with my stand on this issue even in my FB page, I’m not hiding under my blanket.

Pislabrakenrol. Hahahaha.

  25. its ok since its how he sees the world then let him…he did not say that gnyan dapat pananaw nating lahat…. wala nmang gnayn eh ang knya lng its his own point of view… kya nga freeedom og expression eh.. kung kabastos bastos patayan kabastusan man sa atin… sknya ndi eh, thats how he sees the world eh. di nmn tyo pareparehas mag isip. dba? may mga bgy na di parehas and may mga taong rapist manyak criminal nagdadala ng sma ng loob… bastos chismosa iba iba kya iba iba pananaw nyan sa mundo. di ntin macocontrol yan. nagreact ang mga tao dhil si God yun tinira. kaso di ntin hawak isip nya… parang optical illusion. di ntin nakikita ang nasa isip nung nag gawa ng art na yan….not unless alamin bkit gnyan..ang gnawa ng malaman.

  26. Sure sure… people who come here to either provide their favorable or distaste for the artist’s work. But hide behind anonymous names. Patawa.

  28. If the art form is such that it becomes uncomfortable to watch, it should be classified as pornography

  29. To me this is not an art exhibit but to show one’s hatred for Catholics.
He just found a way to show the world how he hate Catholics and Catholic as a Religion.
It is sad that he used art as an excuse, where others strive to show the world talented Filipino artist art, He just did the opposite. Not all artist appreciate what he did.

  30. Art is subjective. Freedom of expression?

Nakaklungkot. Parang Law of supply and Demand din pala yan.

  32. If he wanted to provoke critical thinking why don’t he do art that would benefit our country, let say art that would help the countries economy instead of having those exhibit he has. In the first place di naman sa kanya gawa yong di ba? Inilagyan nya lang ng kong anik anik yong gawa ng iba then claim it. If I were you why don’t you put your own face in your exhibit and stuff it with condom. Would you like that? My dear friend your artistic freedom is not absolute it is govern by laws. We know that artist have their own world real or not, if you don’t believe in something we catholic believe then tackle some other subject as your art. Have you not known that it is sensitive to tackle religion? Well, I think you have learn your lesson. and next time instead of CHRIST as your subject of humiliation try making yourself as subject and see from the point of view your friends and family if they like it.

  36. I wonder why Mideo Cruz cannot do artwork with figurehead of other religions in the first place. Coward! Why can’t he express his arts through other religions (You know which ones I am referring to). He has fear eh? And yet he doesn’t fear the wrath of the Almighty. Then he cannot be a perfect artist after all. Hindi nya kayang gawin yun with other religions, because if he does, pugot na ang ulo nya. A good artist should know the sensitivity of human beings, of whose kind he is one. I think his art is a beastly (take note of the root word “beast” here, because only beasts do not have sensitivity to feelings of human beings) manner of expressing his unusual emotional setup. I think he had problems with his family (or his mother was ****), and he wants to pour out his rage to everyone including the one who gave his Life. Otherwise, this man is rooting for attention. Bad thing, he used religious images to achieve this. I think this way he is testing the Omnipotent. He will have his own time. It is clear in one of the 10 Commandments that “Thou shall not use thy Lord our God’s Name in vain”. Pictures are words even before letters were used by human beings (remember the “Hieroglyphics”). Those pictures of mentally ill Mideo are indeed a transgression of such Commandment. They are sacrilegious in plain sense. They are a total blasphemy. No justification could be issued in favor of those pictures. This man deserves to be penalized. What if an artist put Mideo’s mother’s ass all over the internet, will he not react to that? What if P-noy’s picture be disgustingly vandalized? Mideo is nothing but a plain pervert! Lastly, I would just like to ask: if this man has blotted out divine fear in his conscience, what more horrible things could he be capable of doing in the future? I throw this alarming concern to the proper authorities.

  37. ALL OF YOU HATERS ARE VERY FUNNY AND A LOT OF YOU REALLY DID CAME HERE TO SHOW YOUR IGNORANCE & EXERCISE YOUR STUPIDITY…

    HOW?

THAT’S WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU WORSHIP STONE COLD FIGURES & IMAGES (OF A NON-EXISTING HISTORICAL BEING) RENDERED BY DIFFERENT ARTISTS…

IN OTHER WORDS…YOU WORSHIP ARTWORKS TOO.

    TRUTH HURTS =)

  38. @hawkins

I have little to say because you guys nailed it on the hands and feet. Those hypocrites just dont know art appreciation. Art is a hell lot more than just aesthetics, that is if these stupid hypocrites know the meaning of aesthetics. Long live freedom of expression!
