MANILA – Wearing butterfly wings, children joined the call to save Mother Earth in an activity organized by the National Council of Churches of the Philippines (NCCP), April 24 at the Quezon City Memorial Circle.

Rommel Linatoc of the NCCP and Norma Dollaga of Kasimbayan acted in a story titled Asul na Uod, (Blue Worm) written by Agong Capus of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI). The story is about a caterpillar who used to live in a paradise destroyed by foreign mining companies. The caterpillar transformed into a butterfly and found ways to save the environment, enjoining children to do the same.

The children were also taught a song written by Rebecca Lawson of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP). The song goes:

We should be like butterflies; flap our wings and we’ll fly
We can clean the rivers; stop the mines if we try
We must be more caring or our planet may die
We are a big family; protect the earth and sky

The children gave out cut-outs with slogans such as “Stop Large-Scale Mining,” “Mitigate Global Warming” and “Protect our Environment.” (Photos by Fred Dabu / (https://www.bulatlat.com))
