In Davao City, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Southern Mindanao spearheaded a protest rally and liturgy in Rizal Park on the eve of the commemoration of the first year since the Ampatuan Massacre.
In Ampatuan, Maguindanao, thousands troop to the massacre site in Sitio Masalay to pay tribute and demand justice for the victims. The families of the victims offered flowers, candles and prayers and demand for the speedy resolution of the case. The families were joined by various human-rights and media groups, including foreign delegates. Department of Justice Secretary Leila de Lima graced the commemoration rites and read President Benigno Aquino III’s message for the victims. Maguindanao Governor Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu led the unveiling of the marker in honor of the victims.
Baguio journalists planted 20 pine tree saplings were planted in honor of the victims of the massacre. Later in the afternoon, journalists lighted 58 candles, which were floated at the Baguio Burnham Lake.
Media groups in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental held a torch parade and lighted candles in honor of the massacre victims.
In Manila, various progressive and media groups marched from Espana Boulevard to Don Chino Roces Bridge (formerly Mendiola), challenging President Benigno Aquino III to ensure justice for the 58 victims of the massacte and to end the culture of impunity in the Philippines. (Bulatlat.com)
