It has been said that the conditions of women and children reflect the extent of poverty in a country because they are the most vulnerable to it. But as the history of March 8, as well as that of other people’s struggles in history show, women could also be the face of the struggle. By [...]

News in Pictures: Progressive Groups Condemn ‘State of Undeclared Martial Law’ in Negros Oriental

DUMAGUETE CITY — Marking the commeration of the 38th aniversary of the declaration of martial law in 1972, progressive groups led by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Negros Oriental, held protest actions on Tuesday, condemning the ‘state of undeclared martial law’ in the province and the extension of the counter insurgency program Oplan Bantay Laya.

Oplan Bantay Laya, implemented by the 302nd Infantry Brigade and 79th Infantry Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, had already resulted in six cases of extrajudicial killings in Negros Oriental, including the murder of Fermin Lorico, chairperson of Kahugpungan Alang sa Ugma sa mga Gagmay’ng Mag-uuma sa Oriental Negros (KAUGMAON)-Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas on June 2009.

On June 28, 2010, Fernando “Andot” Dejino was shot dead by unidentified gunmen while on his way home with his wife and mother. Dejino, was an active member Kasayan Farmers Association (KASAYFA), which actively opposed the expansion and operation of jathropa plantation in Siaton, Negros Oriental. (Photos by Mordino M. 1. Nitoy Says:

actually, it is not the real military who made the killings here in negros. we all know that their is or are relatives of prominent families or politicians who are abusing the rghts of or fellow men. The military that you are talking about are just paid by this people. if the government or authorized agency will noticed it, they can also be out of the service. therefore, why not make actions to eradicate this people rather than keeping on criticizing the government. Otherwise, we are also like them who knows what is right but keep on doing the wrong thing because nobody cares the real issue. the issue is keep your eyes open and don't just threw the garbage to the system. We can only correct our system by doing the thing to do.
