Monochromatic but Not Monotonous

Sa Dulo ng Papel

For someone who follows Iggy’s style and body of works, one thing that is easily noticeable is his penchant for monochromes.

His works are devoid of rainbows and bright combinations of colors.
For the oil pieces in KIMI IMIK, he uses mostly grey, black, dark green with orange and red behind and beyond each work while his pen and ink are all set in a light-golden brown background.

For an artist of a lesser talent, this constant monochromatic assemblage could be boring and monotonous. Not with Iggy though.

Not with KIMI IMIK, at least.

Hindi Laging Ganito

The monochromatic ensemble falls into place as the show’s main goal is obviously beyond entertainment and providing a colorful visual feast. For Iggy, art is used for a higher goal: as a tool for change by presenting the need for change in a society like ours.

The blacks, grays and dark greens evoke a feeling of gloom as one looks at the paintings in one glance. Looking closer though, the gloomy feel turns into a sign of doom as the images clearly show the horrifying situation we confront as a nation.

But no, the reds and oranges highlight what is ahead, beyond the gloom or doom- the rising of the oppressed. Or for those who may want to see it in a simpler, less complicated way- the dawning of a new day.

For all its worth, Raoul Ignacio Rodriguez, deserves an audience for his very first solo exhibit. Not only because his exhibit works are outstanding works of art. Not only because these works are created in the midst of storms, figuratively and literally. Not only because these ensemble is created by an artist with an award for his body of works.

KIMI IMIK deserves an audience because this show can move us and agitate us to choose our role in the current order of things in Philippine society.

And they don’t make shows like this one often nowadays.

KIMI IMIK will run until November 30, 2009 and is co-produced by slash/art artists’ initiatives. (Bulatlat.com)
