Members of people’s organizations marked the birth anniversary of Andres Bonifacio with a protest against the renewed push for Charter change.
Anakpawis Party List and the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU-May First Movement) led thousands of protesters in a march from Plaza Miranda to the foot of Chino Roces (formerly Mendiola) bridge. Protesters carried a huge picture of Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo dancing the Cha-cha and a banner that read, “Oust Gloria!”
Anakpawis said, “We reject Cha-cha, in any form and by whatever means, as a sell-out of our national patrimony and institutionalization of neocolonial politics in the country.”
Bayan secretary general Renato M. Reyes Jr. said, “We vow to use the same nationalist aspirations of the hero Andres Bonifacio in thwarting the moves of the Arroyo regime to stay in power and to surrender national patrimony to foreign interests. Expect more protests in the days to come.”
In another statement, the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP-Philippine Peasant Movement) condemned Arroyo’s moves to change the Constitution, particularly the proposal to open up agricultural lands to 100-percent foreign ownership.
Reyes said further, “Allowing 100-percent ownership of land is like begging foreigners to recolonize the Philippines. Bonifacio would be turning in his grave with this gross national betrayal.”
Anakpawis said it has chosen November 30 to highlight the ‘unfinished revolution for the national and democratic aspirations of the people.’(Bulatlat.com)
