Another activist was arrested by elements of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Calamba City, according to the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan-New Patriotic Alliance) in Southern Tagalog.

Emmanuel Dionida, executive director of labor institute LEADERS, is among the 72 activists accused
of multiple murder in connection with a raid by the New People’s Army (NPA) in Puerto Galera, Mindoro Oriental in March 2006. He is now detained at the Camp Vicente Lim in Calamba City, Laguna.

Dionida is the sixth to be arrested among the 72 respondents. Also nabbed and detained at the Calapan City District Jail in Mindoro Oriental for similar charges are Remigio Saladero, Jr., Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU-May First Movement) legal counsel; Rogelio Galit, spokesperson of Katipunan ng mga Magbubukid sa Kabite (Kamagsasaka-Ka), transport sector leader Nestor San Jose; Bayan Muna member Crispin Zapanta; and, Arnaldo Seminiano, organizer of the Ilaw-Buklod ng Manggagawa (IBM).

The Bayan-Southern Tagalog denounced the continuing crackdown against leaders and members of people’s organizations in the region. The group called for a stop to the criminalization and persecution of political activists.(Bulatlat.com)
