The boys, photographed in Pampanga province some one and a half hours north of Manila, watch in excitement as from the middle of the stick, a spider hangs and scrambles up. In a few minutes it will be fighting it out with the other spider at the end of the stick. The spider that drops from the stick loses. Spider-fighting is a favorite game among many rural children in the Philippines. Slow as the game is since spiders naturally move slowly, it is by watching spider fights that children in the Philippines usually get their first taste of suspense from competitive games.
